Lawyers Group Condemns DoD’s Warrantless Search Policy
The National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL) has condemned a new DoD policy which
requires that military defense attorneys consent to warrantless searches of their office computers
just like other users, a move the group says violates attorney-client privilege. The NACDL executive
committee passed a resolution on May 30 calling for DoD to reverse the policy, which the group said
denies the fundamental right of military personnel to have confidential communications with their lawyers.
The May 9 directive from the Pentagon’s chief information officer advises that “the U.S.
Government may inspect and seize data” stored on government computers, and that such information
is not private. “The government has no right to intrude on confidential communications or work
product without a search warrant from a neutral judicial officer,” said Jack B. Zimmermann, an
attorney and retired Marine Corps officer, and co-sponsor of the resolution. “The men and women
in the armed forces, who risk their lives every day to protect our system of justice, deserve at least
the same degree of confidentiality in communicating with their lawyers as do civilians.” To see

CFC Raised Record $273 Million in 2007
The 2007 Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) posted a fifth consecutive year of record pledges, with the
federal community donating $273.1 million in 2007 to charity, the Office of Personnel Management (OPM)
reported on June 2. OPM administers the CFC, the world’s largest workplace charity drive. In
2006, the campaign raised $271.6 million. Since its inception in 1961, the CFC has raised more than
$6 billion. During the autumn 2007 campaign, employees and military personnel in the Washington, D.C.
area—the largest campaign area—pledged $60 million to the National Capital Area CFC. “The
CFC is about people helping people,” Springer said of the campaign, now in its 47th year. To
