Report Offers Details on Acquisition Work Force

The Office of Management and Budget on May 5 released its annual report on the status of the federal acquisition workforce. Among its findings: While more than 50 percent of the 61,000-employee federal acquisition work force will be eligible to retire within the next decade, the average worker age has decreased slightly. The report also says that while the overall size of the acquisition work force has remained steady since 2001, there has been a 6.86 percent increase in the Contracting subcategory (series GS-1102)—from 26,608 in 2001 to 28,434 in 2007. The GS-1102 series makes up about 46 percent of the acquisition work force. The report, prepared by the Federal Acquisition Institute, summarizes work force demographics for Fiscal Year 2007 across five federal occupational series that support federal acquisition programs... FAA Aviation Safety Inspector Sentenced on Theft Charges

A judge has sentenced a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Safety Inspector to 24 months probation after he pleaded guilty to falsely claiming membership in the Air National Guard and submitting bogus requests for military leave. Emilio Estrada, of Maryland, admitted that on 19 different occasions, from 2000 until July 2006, he asked for military leave, claiming to be a member of the D.C. Air National Guard Bureau (DCANG), the Department of Justice (DOJ) said. However, military records showed that he was separated from DCANG on Dec. 8, 1991,and has not since been a member of the military, DOJ said. Estrada was also ordered to pay a fine of $2,500 and perform 100 hours of community service. The judge noted that prior to sentencing, Estrada repaid the $24,432.08 in wages the FAA said it lost through his false leave claims, DOJ said in a statement. To see more, go to:

3,500 Surge Troops to Redeploy to U.S.

About 3,500 soldiers from the 3rd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division will redeploy to Fort Benning, Ga., in the next several weeks, the military said on May 5. Soldiers from the 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team (HBCT) had deployed in March 2007—one of five units deployed in support of the “surge.” The unit “inherited battle space with a history of sparse security force presence prior to 2004,” said Brig. Gen. Dan Allyn, chief of staff, Multi-National Corps-Iraq. Allyn said their efforts “successfully reduced sectarian violence and attacks against Coalition and Iraqi security forces…” The 3rd HBCT is the third of the surge brigades to redeploy; the remaining two will redeploy by the end of July. Allyn said the drawdown “demonstrates continued progress,” and that commanders will re-examine force requirements later in the summer.  To see more, go to: http://www.mnf-iraq.com/index.php?option=
